He does things that he knows are wrong because he has convinced himself that he's a hero. I think the biggest part is the way that the game puts you, as the player, exactly where Walker is, as a character. Is it the fact that the player character himself performs (most of) the atrocities? That's certainly a large part of it, but many of them the player doesn't really have a choice in (phosphorus, water trucks). What makes this game so powerful?
